Overview

From the East Frisian lighthouse to modern city towers to the so-called ivory tower in the highlands of Sri Lanka – these are our five best viewing towers with a romantic factor.

5. Campen Lighthouse
Ostfriesland

It is the tallest lighthouse on the German mainland and one of the tallest in the world. Far away from the hustle and bustle of city life, the 65-metre-high Campen lighthouse offers pure romance with views of the North Sea and the flat countryside stretching far into the distance. Its beacon shines around 55 metres into the night. From March to November, visitors can climb the 308 steps to the viewing platform. Because of its steel lattice construction, locals also call their lighthouse the East Frisian Eiffel Tower.

4. Euromast
Rotterdam

Action and romance await at the Euromast Rotterdam. The tower measures a total height of 185 metres. An elevator takes you comfortably to the top. Adrenaline junkies can abseil 100 metres vertically, reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour. Enjoy the view while dining in the panoramic restaurant. If you book in advance, you can end the day in one of the two hotel suites with a view over Rotterdam. The observation tower was opened in 1960. It was designed by Dutch architect Huig Maaskant. Today, the Euromast is a landmark of Rotterdam – and a top observation tower for lovers.

3. Willis Tower
Chicago

The former Sears Tower has been called Willis Tower since 2009. At over 500 metres, Willis Tower is Chicago's tallest skyscraper. On clear days, the visitor platform at a height of 412 metres offers a view of up to 80 kilometres. For that very special question, there is even a proposal package available to book: when proposing marriage on one of the enclosed glass balconies, the city lies at the feet of the dream couple. For the big wedding celebration, the entire Skydeck is available exclusively for a booking fee starting at USD 5,500 – with the best view over Chicago Bay.

2. Tower at Museu da AmazĂ´nia
Manaus

On the outskirts of Manaus is the 100 km² Museu da Amazônia, or MUSA for short. Seemingly in the middle of the jungle, a 42-metre-high steel tower rises above the treetops. Early risers can experience the sunrise and the awakening of the animal world there. For those who are not morning people, there are observations at sunset. But even during the day, the view and the exotic sounds create a romantic atmosphere. 242 steps lead to three platforms. A maximum of 30 visitors are allowed on these platforms at the same time – so that everyone can enjoy the peace and quiet.

1. Ambuluwawa Tower
Sri Lanka

The gleaming white Ambuluwawa Tower in Gampola in the highlands of Sri Lanka rises like a giant unicorn from the mountain peak. A spiral staircase leads all the way to the top. It's best not to be afraid of heights, as the stairs are no wider than 20 cm at the top. You need strong nerves and – depending on how busy it is – a lot of patience. Those who master this challenge together will experience the greatest feelings of happiness at the top. However, the view is already spectacular on the first platform. The tower was built in the early 2000s as a symbol of peaceful coexistence between different religions and cultures. Admittedly, the white ivory tower is no longer an insider tip, but as a statement of love and peace and an architectural highlight, it is still our number one.
